To His Excellency, Gifford Pinchot, Governor of Pennsylvania. 

Sir: In compliance with the Acts of April 14, 1903 and April IS, 
J.919, I beg to submit herewith the reports of the Department of 
Mines for the years ending December 31, 1921 and 1922. Part I 
covers in detail the operations in the twenty-five Anthracite Districts, 
and Part II the operations in the thirty Bituminous Districts, as 
returned by the Inspectors.

REPORT

DEPARTMENT OF MINES 



INTRODUCTION 



The years covered by this report, 1921-1922, were marked by ex- 
treme dullness of trade in 1921 and disastrous strikes in 1922, last- 
ing practically from April 1 to September 11. The production dur- 
ing the latter year was reduced to the lowest figures since 1902. 

The total amount of coal produced in Pennsylvania in 1921 was 
204,805,776 net tons; in 1922, 162,220,247 net tons. In the anthracite 
region the production in 1921 was 90,358,642 tons ; in 1922, 53,910,201 
tons. In the bituminous region the production in 1921 was 114,447,134 
tons ; in 1922, 108,310,046 tons. 

The number of employes in and about the mines was 362,345 in 
1921 ; 354,510 in 1922. In the anthracite region the number was 
161,926 in 1921 ; 159,880 in 1922. In the bituminous region the number 
was 200,419 in 1921 ; 194,630 in 1922. 

The production of coke in the bituminous region in 1921 was 
4,876,289 net tons; in 1922, 7,692,899 net tons.
